This year, I attended Realcomm, an industry conference focused upon the application of technology in the real estate industry. This event is co-located IBcon, a newly minted gathering focused on the emerging field of intelligent buildings. My takeaway is that the real estate industry is undergoing a dramatic change in the area of the rapid ingestion of technology. I saw technology to enhance everything from property leasing, work order management, tenant retention, property evaluation, life cycle forecasting, occupant comfort, physical security, and on and on.

In movies, you see some guy sitting at his computer banging away at the keys and creating sophisticated algorithms that can go around advanced cybersecurity measures or can crack strong passwords or anything else that looks really cool for the camera. The not-as-glamorous reality is that hackers can shop for hacking tools online. Or better yet, they can exploit social engineering and get access to your system directly from you.

It has been a little over one month since I returned from the Realcomm Las Vegas 2014 conference with some assumptions confirmed. I was thoroughly impressed with the event schedule, session presenters and participants. From my perspective, the event generated a tremendous amount of valuable information for its stakeholder community. I even had the honor of meeting AJ Jolivette, CTO and president of Terosaur, Inc., who demonstrated how their drone technology may play a role in commercial real estate in the near future.
